Argonaut

Argonaut: Amphibious Autonomy for Land and Water Surveying

Developed entirely in-house by Ultrabeam, Argonaut is a fully autonomous amphibious survey vehicle designed for both manned and unmanned operations across land and water. Originally built as part of DASA’s Map the Gap Phase 1 competition—where Ultrabeam was proudly awarded a winning position—Argonaut represents a leap forward in versatile survey capability.

Measuring 3.0m long, 1.45m wide, and 1.8m high, Argonaut can be equipped with a range of high-precision sensors for 3D mapping, including high-resolution multibeam sonar and LiDAR. Its hybrid capabilities make it a powerful all-terrain solution for complex survey environments.

On land, Argonaut features an 8×8 wheel drive system with high-torque motors and a robust gearbox, capable of climbing inclines up to 45 degrees. It reaches speeds of up to 16 mph (at 6000 RPM), with a standard cruising speed of 8 mph (at 3000 RPM). In water, the vehicle achieves 4.5 mph using dual 48V Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 electric motors, offering shallow draft performance ideal for confined or transitional environments.

Powered by 48V Tesla battery modules (21.2kWh), Argonaut delivers over 12 hours of endurance at standard survey speeds and a range of 20–60 miles depending on terrain. Recharging from 10% to 90% takes just two hours, ensuring operational continuity in the field.

Argonaut is built for flexibility. It supports real-time data visualisation for immediate decision-making, with post-processed outputs offering high-detail deliverables. The option for manned operation adds further utility, making Argonaut an exceptionally adaptable tool for diverse marine and land survey requirements.
